9 Top and easy Home remedies for cough

When cold and flu season hits, it’s good to have a variety of home remedies for cough in hand to soothe sore throat. We have tried almost all of them at one time or another, depending on who is coughing and what type of cough you have. I hope you find them useful too.

 Honey and cinnamon

Pour some honey in a small bowl (I used an 8 oz mason jar) and mix in a little cinnamon to taste. Take a spoonful when necessary for quiet cough. Both cinnamon and honey are anti-bacterial and anti-viral, and honey coats and soothes the throat.

Elderberry Syrup

I was so relieved when I discovered how to make syrup elderberry, because it was something my youngest son could have really helped calm the cough, but he did not vomit. Hot Tea

Whether herbal or regular, steam and extra fluid provided by the help loosen congestion hot tea, stay hydrated and soothe irritated tissues.


Sucking a mint or by one or two drops of peppermint essential oil quality in a glass of water can also help relieve cough. Be careful with this – do not use more than six drops of peppermint oil, and do not use oil with children.


Few things are more comforting than a hot shower, steaming to loosen congestion and opening the airways. This is likely to provide temporary relief, but it sure feels good. Keep a humidifier to moisten the air will also help a cough / dry itchy throat.

Cold Air

We came across this remedy by accident when our son had a hoarse, squeaky cough like a baby. During the course of carrying the emergency room one night when I was really miserable, we find that transport in cold air calmed the cough. The doctor advises us using this trick again as needed if it was hit with another coughing fit. The cold air helps reduce swelling and inflammation in the throat.


There is a reason that many OTC medicines contain alcohol. Alcohol kills bacteria and acts as a shock to the throat (and burn on the way down). Instead of alcohol cocktail high-priced, adults can opt for a simple shot of liquor to soothe the cough. Mom used to dose us with peppermint schnapps. Just a sip often can have the desired effort. The whiskey is another popular choice, but I think the combination of alcohol / mint is better.

Milk and Butter

This was new to me, but what works home remedies, it is suggested to combine 1 cup of warm milk with two tablespoons sweet butter for dry cough. This works best for a dry, nonproductive cough (not much mucus), as it will cover and relax your throat. (Skim fat is not enough to do the job.)

Hot Chinese mustard, wasabi or horseradish

If you can brave them, these strong spices can kill your cough – and possibly your palate – as well as clearing congestion in a hurry. You can use them freely in the food, or take them directly. I do not recommend is something a college friend of mine did it for a bet – inhalation of Chinese hot mustard up his nose. He won the bet and congestion cleared, but do not think his sense of smell has been the same since.
